How water treatment polymers work
Water treatment polymers are low-molecular-weight polycarboxylates. They control scale and deposits in three ways:
- Threshold inhibition: a few mg/L of polymer delays nucleation of calcium carbonate, sulphate and phosphate far beyond the stoichiometric amount.
- Crystal modification: polymer adsorbed on growing crystal faces distorts the lattice, so deposits stay soft and non-adherent.
- Dispersion: adsorbed polymer charges particle surfaces and keeps silt, iron oxide, clay and microbial debris suspended for removal with blowdown.
Choosing a polymer
Homopolymers (PAA, HPMA) are cost-effective for carbonate scale and general dispersion. Adding sulfonate (AA/AMPS) gives calcium tolerance and calcium-phosphate, zinc and iron control. Terpolymers add a nonionic monomer for the highest-stress waters. The neutral sodium polyacrylate grade suits pigment slurries and detergents.
FAQ
Which polymer is best for calcium phosphate control?
AA/AMPS copolymer (ZEELCHEM™ 3100) and the terpolymer (ZEELCHEM™ 7000) give the best calcium phosphate inhibition because of their sulfonate groups.
Which polymer works at the highest temperature?
Polymaleic acid, HPMA (ZEELCHEM™ 200), remains effective up to about 350 °C and is used in boilers and thermal desalination.
Are ZEELCHEM™ polymers phosphorus-free?
Yes. All six ZEELCHEM™ polymers are phosphorus-free.
